Compared to CRT (Cathode Ray Tube) monitors, LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) screens overcome the drawbacks of bulkiness, high power consumption, and flickering. However, they also introduce new challenges, such as higher manufacturing costs, limited viewing angles, and less-than-ideal color reproduction. Nevertheless, from a technical standpoint, LCD monitors still hold significant advantages, which are evident in the following aspects:

1. Smaller Size and Lighter Weight

Traditional CRT monitors rely on cathode ray tube imaging, requiring a vacuum tube and an electron gun at the rear, typically extending over 30 cm in length—resulting in a bulky overall structure. In contrast, LCD monitors use liquid crystal materials and corresponding imaging technology, eliminating the need for a cathode ray tube. This makes them much more compact. For example, EMC’s 15-inch LCD monitor (BM-568) takes up only one-half to one-third the space of a 19-inch CRT monitor, offering greater placement flexibility. Additionally, its compact size significantly reduces weight.

2. Larger Effective Display Area

Due to technical limitations, CRT monitors have a smaller actual viewing area than their labeled size suggests. For instance, a "15-inch" CRT monitor may only provide around 14.1 inches of visible screen, while a "17-inch" model might offer just 15 to 16 inches. LCD monitors, however, have no such discrepancy—their labeled size matches the actual display area. For example, a 15-inch Samsung LCD provides a full 15 inches of screen, equivalent to a 17-inch CRT. If the prices are similar, an LCD is clearly the better choice.

3. Zero Radiation and No Flickering

CRT monitors generate electrostatic charges and radiation due to the movement of electron beams inside the cathode ray tube. The faster the electron beam scans, the stronger the radiation, which can lead to eye strain, myopia, and skin irritation with prolonged use. LCD monitors, on the other hand, do not rely on electron beams, eliminating radiation and flickering issues. Additionally, CRT monitors form images through horizontal scanning, requiring a high refresh rate to avoid flicker. LCDs, however, render images almost instantaneously, meaning no flicker even at lower refresh rates.

4. Lower Power Consumption and Stronger Anti-Interference Capability

CRT monitors consume power not only through their circuitry but also due to the cathode ray tube and screen operation. LCDs, in contrast, mainly rely on backlighting and circuit power, with negligible screen power consumption. For example, EMC’s 15-inch BM-568 LCD consumes only 35W—nearly 50% less than a CRT of the same size. Furthermore, since LCDs do not use electron beams for imaging, they avoid high radiation issues and instead rely on backlighting, making them more resistant to interference. This ensures better visibility even in brightly lit environments.

5. Superior Image Quality

CRT monitors use analog signal transmission, which can degrade image quality due to signal loss during processing. LCDs, however, use digital signal transmission, directly receiving data from the graphics card without signal degradation. That said, most LCDs still use VGA interfaces designed for analog displays, with only a few manufacturers (such as EMC, Samsung, and Acer) incorporating digital video interfaces.

6. Smarter Functionality

Due to differences in materials and technology, LCD monitors often have fixed parameter configurations, necessitating more intelligent performance adjustments. Manufacturers have developed various solutions for this, primarily falling into two categories:

· Auto-Adjustment & Optimal Settings (e.g., EMC Auto-Set): Adjusting one parameter automatically optimizes all others to ensure the best display quality.

· One-Key Reset Function: A single button press restores all settings to factory defaults.
